Middle School at Beacon (Grades 6–8) is designed for the specific developmental moment of early adolescence. We keep classes small, advisories close, and expectations high — and we give students room to try, to fail, and to grow.
Meeting middle-schoolers where they are.
Early adolescence is a time of enormous cognitive, social, and emotional change. Beacon's Middle School is designed for exactly this moment — with adults who understand it, a schedule that supports it, and a program that stretches without breaking.
Students in Grades 6–8 discover new interests through electives, take on leadership through class councils and clubs, and are steadily prepared for the intellectual demands of Upper School.
The three-year arc.
Grade 6
The transition year: two humanities blocks, pre-algebra, life science, world language continuation, and a required arts rotation. A dedicated Grade 6 dean shepherds the class.
Grade 7
Increased academic independence — English and history taught by department specialists, algebra readiness, physical science, and the first year of electives.
Grade 8
The capstone Middle School year: an accelerated humanities seminar, Algebra I, earth & environmental science, and the Grade 8 Symposium research project.
A rigorous core, and room to explore.
A workshop model built on reading whole books, writing across genres, and public speaking. Students read 8–12 works per year and complete four major writing projects.
A three-year sequence covering ancient civilizations, world geography, and U.S. history and civics. Primary source reading and structured seminar begin in Grade 6.
Grade-level and accelerated tracks converge on Algebra I by Grade 8, with an emphasis on problem-based learning and mathematical writing.
Life, physical, and earth & environmental science taught in dedicated Middle School labs, with weekly investigations and a Grade 8 research project.
Spanish, French, and Latin continue from Lower School, with new students placed by proficiency. Language classes meet five days a week.
A required arts rotation in Grade 6 across visual art, music, and theater; specialization in Grades 7–8 with performance and exhibition opportunities.
Daily PE in Grade 6, transitioning to interscholastic athletics or a movement elective for Grades 7 and 8. Fifteen middle-school teams compete each year.
Every student meets in a small advisory four times a week. The Life Skills curriculum covers organization, digital citizenship, identity, and belonging.

A three-day team-building overnight at a nearby environmental education center in September.
A four-day expedition combining backpacking, journaling, and service work.
Every eighth grader researches and presents an original topic in a public symposium each May.
A full-scale production each winter, cast and produced by Middle School students.
